Every day brings new challenges and when we are unable to counter those confrontations, we feel physically and emotionally weak.  Lot has been said, discussed, thousands of books and research articles have published on health care with primary affects of stress on human beings.

The reason for stress differs from one person to another. Health care experts are of the opinion that for both men and women the common causes of mental disturbance can be due to family problems, financial matters, lack of time for family, divorce and too much work load at office. You might have tried many medicines and regularly visited the doctor’s clinic to do away with stress in your life, but Yoga offers the best therapy for any ailment. It not only heals your physical wounds but also offers mental relaxation.

In this post I will discuss about Yoga as a stress relief solution. However, it’s important to note that the process of healing in Yoga is slow, hence don’t expect miracles over night.

Before you embark on taking Yoga lessons you need to keep in mind certain facts–

  • Always take yoga lessons under a qualified Yoga trainer, for he will help you with right postures and techniques.
  • Wear comfortable clothes and its better not to put on heavy jewelry. The best time to practice Yoga is early morning after having light breakfast.
  • If you have medical problems do inform your Yoga instructor before joining the classes.
  • While you’re practicing Yoga, lots of toxins get released from our body, hence it’s important to drink minimum of 10 glasses of water daily.

There are different types of yoga ‘asanas’, just to name few–

  1. The Shoulder Stand (Sarvang Asana)–effective for liver disorder, hyper tension and indigestion.
  2. The Bow (Dhanur Asana)–cures asthama, diabetes and rheumatism.
  3. The Triangle (Trikona Asana)– tones spinal nerves
  4. The Headstand (Shirsh Asana)–offers relaxation on lower back and improves memory
  5. Hidden Lotus (Baddha Padmasan)–decreases joints pain and improves liver function.

But in order to beat stress, there are certain specific body postures which are followed in Yoga—

  1. Shavasana—it’s the position of lying at the back of one’s body like a corpse, this pose gives a sense of calmness of body and mind.
  2. Vrksasanas- one needs to stand straight, then bring one foot near the inner thigh of the other leg. This position improves body balance and offers relaxation to thighs and ankles.
  3. Padmasana—in this Yoga one should be in sitting pose with legs are crossed and each feet resting on thighs. This pose is good for meditation and breathing.

If you want to reap benefits of Yoga, then regular practice of the ‘asanas’ and ‘pranayamas’ is a must daily for an hour.

A Bit About History of Yoga

Historical records suggest that Yoga originated 3000 BC during Indus Valley Civilization and finds a special mention in Hindu and Buddhist religious scripts. Medical research have suggested that through regular Yoga practice, even serious physical ailments like AIDS, arthiritis, asthama and obesity can be  cured easily.
